The Warhol: The Velvet Underground & Nico, Scepter Studio Sessions Exhibition
In 2022, The Andy Warhol Museum Archives uncovered a rare and culturally significant artifact: early studio recordings of The Velvet Underground, captured at a formative moment in the band’s evolution. These raw, unfiltered sessions offer an unprecedented glimpse into the creative origins of The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967)—the groundbreaking debut album produced by Andy Warhol, whose iconic peel-away banana cover remains a symbol of radical artistic expression.
These historic tapes became the centerpiece of the Scepter Studio Sessions Exhibition—a multi-sensory exploration at the intersection of music, art, and countercultural history. The exhibition invited visitors to step inside the sonic and visual world of Warhol’s Factory, tracing the band’s experimental energy through immersive audio, evocative photography from 1966–1967, rare Screen Test footage, and curated ephemera that captured the spirit of an era defined by bold reinvention.
My team was honored to lead the ad campaign for this landmark exhibition—developing a strategic and visually arresting rollout that engaged art institutions, cultural critics, and a new generation of creatives drawn to Warhol’s enduring influence. More than a retrospective, this exhibition was a reawakening—a powerful rediscovery of the moment where sound, vision, and subculture fused into something timeless.

A Controversial Beginning
Although it didn't receive immediate, widespread praise, The Velvet Underground & Nico became one of the most influential records in music history.

The Master Tapes
The monophonic reel-to-reel 1⁄4” master tapes of the Velvet Underground at Scepter Studios, 1966, were unarchived at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA, in 2022.

Lou Reed Font
For our campaign's typographic visual direction, we designed a handwritten headline font inspired by Lou's scanned lyric sheets, which he wrote during the Velvet Underground recording sessions.

The Velvet Underground Scepter Studio Sessions Exhibition Promo: Run, Run, Run
Our OLV campaign showcased film clips from Andy Warhol's Screen Tests featuring members of the Velvet Underground. However, we encountered a significant challenge with the audio. Due to copyright restrictions, we were unable to include any of the Velvet Underground's music, even though the museum exhibition aimed to celebrate the discovery of the original tape recording containing many tracks from the legendary album The Velvet Underground & Nico. To overcome this obstacle, we got creative by developing a soundscape track based on the Velvet's original instrumentation. This track serves as a sonic homage to the band, capturing the spirit of their sound without directly covering their music.
